Photofacial

A photofacial is a treatment with intense pulsed light (IPL), which is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrink the vessels. The face, neck, chest, arms, back and legs could be treated. Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2 to 24 hours and can be soothed with aloe gel or ice packs. Sun spots and sun damage will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 1 to 3 weeks. Rosacea can be successfully treated with the IPL and the results will be a more normal skin tone, with less pronounced redness within a week after treatment. Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve complete clearance of sunspots, rosacea, and vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Photofacial?

A: Specialized hand pieces filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels.

Q: How soon will I see results?

A: The sunspots will darken after treatment and will be naturally shed from the skin within 1 to 3 weeks. Skin tone will be more normal, with less pronounced redness within a week following your treatment. Vessels may disappear after treatment or they may appear darker and then fully or partially fade within 10 to 14 days. Typically several treatments will be necessary to achieve complete clearance of sunspots (also called age spots or pigmented lesions), rosacea (general inflammation of the cheeks and face), and vessels (spider veins which can be red, blue or purple in color).

Q. Is it painful?
